Faced with the reality of land confiscation in the 1870s, Taranaki Maori offered a unique form of resistance under their charismatic leaders Te Whiti o Rongomai and Tohu Kakahi. The government's response was the destruction of Parihaka Pa in 1881 and the imprisonment of Te Whiti and Tohu and hundreds of their followers.

In this revised edition, Hazel Riseborough traces the government's actions as they sought to establish European control of Taranaki. It is the story of the government's efforts to destroy Maori self-determination, and of a dramatic Maori response.
