'I know of no single-volume operatic guide that can possibly compare with Kobbé... it is indispensable. BERNARD LEVIN

Kobbé's Complete Opera Book has had an assured place off the bookshelf of every opera-lover ever since it first appeared half a century ago. It is the only book which tells in detail the stories of the world's operas, describes their music, and gives notes on their performances, within the compass of a single volume.

This completely reset ninth edition is the result of by far the most extensive revision of the book ever undertaken. Accounts of 91 additional operas are given for the first time, and the text has grown from 1246 pages to 1670, not counting a greatly enlarged and improved index.

The book now contains details of over 300 regularly performed operas. Several previously unrepresented composers are included, in particular Handel, Chabrier, Tippett, Walton, Shostakovich, Poulenc, Weill and Henze. Others, such as Rossini, Verdi, Janáček and Benjamin Britten, are covered more fully.

All the photographic illustrations are new, and nearly 10o new musical examples have been added. Kobbé is therefore more complete than it has ever been before. And it is as dependable as ever: as well as providing a all the new material.

Lord Harewood has spent over two years editing and revising the existing text and bringing the information about every opera up to date.
