The First Fagin: The True Story of Ikey Solomon

Dickens' character Fagin may have been based on a London underworld figure, Ikey Solomon. Solomon escaped from Newgate Gaol and fled to New York, where he learnt his wife and children had been transported to Van Diemen's Land. Risking discovery by the British, he arrived in the colony, only to be sent to Port Arthur.
